The Lockhart Pan American Golf Association was organized in 1956 by Mr. Julio Perez, who was responsible for organizing the chapter by introducing young men in Lockhart to the sport of golf. Mr. Perez was also responsible for hosting Lockhart’s first State Tournament in 1960, which was attended by chapters from Corpus Christi, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Fort Worth. Seguin, at the time, was not an organized club, but participated as a guest.
The State Tournament was held at the Lockhart State Park and the Luling Golf Course. Mr. Joe Sanchez was elected as the first President of Chapter with approximately 40 enrolled members and 20 playing members. Members at that time were: Joe Sanchez, Cruz Sanchez, Zeke Sanchez, Joe Pastrano, Lee Peralex Sr., Abel Rodriguez, Juan Cano, Bert Guerrero, Tony Garcia, Julio Perez, Pete Galvez, Jesse Garcia, John Aguillion, Dana Thomas, and others.
It has been fifty years since, and the Lockhart P.A.G.A. has never ceased to function. At the present time, the chapter has a membership of 50. Our Chapter is not large in numbers, but big in the spirit of golf and in continuing to influence the enrollment of young people to the chapter.
Benefits are numerous to members, in that they have established the right to participate in any P.A.G.A. Tournament in any of the other cities with a Chapter, the National Winter Meeting, and also the National Tournament. Our chapter offers free membership at the age of 55 to all it’s members.
Officers for 2007-2008 are Fermin T. Islas, President; Thomas Ivarra, Jr., Vice President; Joe Sanchez, Secretary; Fred Cano, Treasurer; Joe Islas, Entertainment Chairman; George Salinas, Tournament Chairman; and Richard Moya, Sr., Handicap Chairman.
The Lockhart P.A.G.A. will hold the 2008 Winter Meeting, March 27 through 29, 2008. We, the Board of Directors and members, are pleased to be apart of one of the largest organizations this country and will do our best to continue to uphold all laws that make this organization the great one that it is.
